Did you know The Sound of Music is the number one tourist draw to Austria? Forget about Austria being the birthplace of Mozart or the home of the Vienna Boys Choir. It seems more people come to Austria to relive the famous movie musical than anything else!

So why not explore the real-life Sound of Music and travel to Salzburg, Austria – the land immortalized by the famous Von Trapp family. The hit movie version starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer was filmed on location in Salzburg in 1964. Promenade down that famous hill and reenact your favorite scenes from this Academy Award winning film. Soon you will find a land filled with fabled architecture, majestic castles, and beautiful landscapes - creating the ambiance that made this true-to-life story the most popular movie musical ever made.

How can you “Climb Every Mountain” and experience a few of your “Favorite Things?” The next time you find yourself in Austria, here are some of the “Sound of Music” must-sees:

 Leopoldskron Palace is the same castle used as the façade for the Von Trapp Family home. Only the outside of this gorgeous structure was used. No filming was done inside. That, of course, was done on a movie set.

 The stunning Mirabell Gardens with their ornate statue of Pegasus is the site where Maria and the Von Trapp children sang Do-Re-Mi. It’s still a magnificent park to relax and stroll along in, even if you don’t feel like humming a few bars of the addicting tune.

 The Rocky Riding School is popular open-air theater and the location of the scene where Baron Von Trapp sang Edelweiss.

 The opening castle scene of the movie is actually the Schloss Ainiff Castle, with a famous moat and nearby Gazebo.

 Another famous castle used in the movie is the Hellbrunn Castle. This 17th Century Royal hunting castle has recently been renovated to accommodate “Sound of Music” fans!

 Travel out to the town of Mondsee, and tour the church where Julie Andrews, as Maria Von Trapp, was married in the movie.

During your visit to Salzburg you’ll discover a city “alive with the sound of music.” Many touring companies even offer special day tours highlighting the famous movie sites, if you’d rather tour with a group.

So Long, Farewell…and see you in Salzburg!
