If you've been diagnosed with a depression condition, your doctor may have prescribed certain drugs. But sometimes the drugs can even make you feel somewhat sub-par. How do you know if what you're feeling are the side effects of the drugs or if it's another, possibly unrelated condition? Here are some common prescription drugs and the kinds of things you need to be cautious of when using them.

• Benzodiazepines. This drug is found commonly in Valium, Ativan, and Xanax. This drug isn't as common as it once was. It was once prescribed to most people who have stress disorders, but it was found to have too many side effects. This drug is not addictive but you can experience withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia and anxiety. These drugs can also not be taken with alcohol and they can cause drowsiness.
• Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois). This drug is found commonly in Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate. This drug is prescribed sometimes for people who are depressed and aren't affected much by other drugs. This drug is also commonly used to treat phobias. If you're taking this drug you need to be particularly cautious of what foods you eat with it. You need to avoid any food containing tyramine, which is found in cheese, beers, yeast, wine, and chicken, or they can experience severe hypertension and maybe heart problems.
• Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. This drug is found in Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. This is often the main treatment of depression today. This drug may not be any more effective than other drugs on the market, but it does have fewer side effects. This is commonly used to treat people with panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other types of mental problems. You need to be fore-warned that this drug has been known to cause mild insumnia, stress, headaches, nausea, and lessened sexual desires and functions.
• Tricyclics. This drug is found in Elavil, Norpramin, Tofranil, Anafranil, Pamelor, and Sineqan. This drug isn't prescribed as often as it once was because the side effects can be severe and can last for a long time. They are used to treat mainly stress and obsessive-compulsive disorders. You need to be careful about weight gain, dry mouth, tiredness, heart problems, dizziness, nausea, and difficulty urinating when taking this drug.
