You Are At: AllSands Home > Potluck1 > Online pen pals
Do you dream of traveling around the world to meet interesting people and experience new cultures but don't have the money or the time? Online pen pals could be just the ticket. Here are 3 simple steps to help you find and keep pen pals.

1) There are many sites online that provide personal ads for pen pals. Once you find a site that matches your interests, start browsing the ads. Look for someone whose interests match your own, or maybe something that you would like to try or learn about or a place you would like to visit.

If you write your own ad, be as specific as possible about what you are looking for. Think about how you feel when reading ads that say generic things like: "I enjoy good food and movies." Try writing something like: "I enjoy making different kinds of pizza and would like to know more recipes. I also enjoy discussing movies. My favorites are 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and 'Terminator'."

2) Your first letter should include lots of questions as well as information about yourself. Write your email as if you were actually speaking to someone that you know. For example: "I just tried a new pizza recipe that included apples! What is the most interesting thing you've had in a pizza?"

3) In order to keep your pen pal interested in you, you must be interesting. Write about things that make you think. Write about things that make you laugh. Introduce new topics when the current ones start to drag.

Topic Suggestions:
- Favorite musicians
- Current events
- Fantasy (each of you pretend to be someone from
a book, movie, or your imagination)
- Talk shows
- Gardening
- Religion
- Sports

While most people online are good people like yourself, it is important to be safe, so don't give out your phone number, address or last name. Also, if you are under 18, please tell an adult if you get an email that makes you nervous or scares you.
