Cheeser was my best friend. He was like a child to me. When he died the devestation was unreal. I was so depressed I couldn't function anymore and I too did not wish to live anymore. Everyones reaction to the loss of a beloved member of your family is different but the ways in which you cope can be the same.
The first thing that a grieving individual needs to remeber is that whatever their feelings they are justified. Just like with the loss of a person there will be grief at the loss of a pet. it can be dealt with in a healthy and understanding manner.
One will never be able to make others understand so don't bother yourself trying. Those who truly care about you will accept your grief as genuine. Make sure you have someone to talk to about your feelings. Getting them out in the open is the first step to healing. talk about your pet as well. Share funny moments and poinant memories that will warm your heart and make you smile. Remembrance is a wonderful thing.
Keep momentoes of your cherished friend. Put out cute photos or keep their favorite toy somewhere where you might see it and think of a fond memory.
Try to continue with your activities because isolating yourself will only make you more miserable.
Find resources to help you deal with the pain. Read books, browse for help on the web or if you feel that you need to talk to a counselor. Your friends will want you feel better about life and deal with your pain. Also try writing stories about your friend or perhaps a poem. Maybe immortalize them in a pretty plaque for your home.
Last but certainly not least, do try to open your heart (when you are ready) to another furry friend. They can help you heal and make you smile again. It wouldn't be at all disrespectful to your beloved pet. In my book, I think that your 'ol pal would want you to be happy and loved again.
