The ages women are bearing children are getting older and older. This is caused in large part by the fact that more women are holding full-time jobs than they ever have before, and the focus of more young women is less on the desire to have children and more on the desire to advance in their careers. In recent years as many as six percent of all babies born in the United States each year are born to women over 40 years old. This ratio is higher than it ever has been before.

The main concern for older women who are considering bearing children is the potential health of the baby. While women today are staying healthier longer than they ever have before, there are still some medical concerns. It had long been thought that the labor and delivery processes were deemed to be too strenuous for women. But with modern maternity methods and the better health condition of women in their 30s and 40s, those concerns are not as prominent. Many physicians don't question the desires of healthy older women to bear children today.

Another major problem facing older women who want to bear children later in life is the declining fertility factor. When a woman reaches the age of 40, the chances that she can conceive children decreases rapidly. There have been many women over 40 who have given birth, but some of those find themselves using donor eggs in order to become pregnant.

Despite the improved health conditions of today's older woman, that doesn't mean having a child when you're older than 40 years old will turn out exactly as you have planned. Another thing you should consider is that older women who give birth are more likely to have a child who has chromosomal abnormalities than younger women. Many of these babies are miscarried, and if they survive, their chances of being born with Down's syndrome is increased.

Regardless, many older women have a deep desire to have children. They have a lot of love to give and have waited a long time to have children. But having a child at an older age is something you should consider carefully before making a final decision.
