Paper Or Plastic?
After paying for our groceries, The cashier often asks, "Do you want plastic or Paper?" Most often we choose brown paper bags, since it is thicker and it is more reliable and it holds better than Plastic. It is best to choose plastic. Although Plastic is better for the earth, it also has many disadvantages.
Paper is used for writing, printing, wrapping, packaging and many more variety of special purposes ranging from filtration of precipitates from solution to manufacture of certain types. Paper is a form of basic material. Plastic is an increasingly popular manufacture material because it is relatively durable and inexpensive to produce.
When the brown paper grocery bags are manufactured, a great deal more pollution results than when plastic bags are being made. Plastic bags are lighter, plastics do not easily break down into simpler components. They do not rust or rot, they can be produced in any color, they have lower density, and they can be manufactured as clear as glass.
Plastic bags are made of nonrenewable fossil resources, and they are not biodegradable. Some plastics produce poisonous fumes when they are burned. When dumped at sea, they foul beaches or choke marine life. Carelessly disposed of on land, they blow around and create highly visible litter. They can be reused or made into more plastic bags, but only in a few locations.
If we want to reduce pollution and save the earth it is best to bring your own reusable bag to the store.
