Easy Fabric Stain Removal
Tips for easy fabric stain removal from all kinds of clothes. Includes ways that can remove even stubborn, set in stains from clothes.
Clothes get dirty. That's just a fact of life. Washing clothes helps to get them clean and remove stains. But even the best detergents don't always remove stains. What if you have something that just doesn't want to come out, maybe old and set in? Can you remove it? Often, with the right type of products, you can.
The first thing to do is when you remove clothes, apply a good stain stick to any obvious stains. This works great, even if it's several days until you are able to launder the garment. Any gel or spray or stick can be used this way.
If that doesn't work, of if you want to remove a stain that has been there for a while, there are a few other good products that can help remove that stain. The first product is Zout. Zout is an enzyme-based product. It eats away at the stain without damaging your clothes. Zout says to apply, rub in, and wait about 5-10 minutes before laundering. I have found that applying, rubbing in, and setting aside for a day or so works even better. Colorfast garments will not fade or get any damage from sitting with Zout rubbed into them. Zout is not available at all stores, but drugstores usually carry it. It isn't expensive, either. Less than $4 for several ounces. This product is great for getting out formula stains, especially if these are old baby garments that you want to use on another baby.
The other wonderful stain removal product is called Oxi-Clean. This is a powder. You can use it several ways. You can add a scoop to your regular laundry detergent and it helps clean your clothes as well as or better than bleach. You can also mix it up into a paste and apply it to stains. As long as the garment is colorfast, this will remove even the most stubborn of stains. Oxi-Clean can be found in retail stores, drugstores, and department stores. It retails for under $10 and lasts a long time.
The important thing is to get to stains as soon as possible. The sooner you treat them and launder them, the better the odds are that you can get them out the first time. But, if you have clothes that have old stains in them, you can still often get them out with, either both Zout and Oxi-Clean. These are a must in every laundry room.
