Bronchitis is a bacterial or viral respiratory ailment that often follows a cold. Acute bronchitis if marked by coughing, chest pains and fever, and usually lasts for a couple of weeks. Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, is coughing and swelling/narrowing of the air passages in the lungs due to irritants like cigarette smoke and toxic air-borne particles.

Aside from the recommended bed rest during bouts with respiratory ailments, numerous natural healing remedies are available to ease the symptoms of, and even treat both acute and chronic bronchitis.

Herbal Tea

A combination of the known medicinal herbs that relieves coughs and dissolves mucus in the lung membranes is one of the best solutions for bronchitis. Mix an ounce each of fennel seed and marshmallow root, and half an ounce each of linden flowers, iceland moss, and licorice. Steep two teaspoons of the mixture in a cup of boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes, strain, and add honey to sweeten as desired. Drink 3-4 cups a day.

Natural Syrups

Cook 1 cup of honey and half a pound of chopped onions until a thick syrup is formed. Take a tablespoon of the syrup every hour.

Or, squeeze the juice of a lemon onto a small cup and add an equal amount of honey. Mix and take a tablespoon of the syrup every hour or as often as desired.

Inhalation

Mix the essential oils of peppermint, pine, sage, and fir. Add five drops of the solution to a bowl of hot water. Drape a towel over your head and lean over the bowl to inhale the oils’ concentrated vapors. The scent helps ease breathing and relieves the inflammations in the bronchial airways.
