Cancer is a frightening word, one we all dread hearing. Yet, there are many steps you can take to help prevent cancer. Start with your diet! Check with your doctor before adding any supplements to your diet.

Calcium: A calcium rich or enhanced diet can help fight of a variety of cancers by protecting cells from attack by carcinogens. Add low fat dairy products, spinach and calcium supplements to your diet to achieve a daily intake of 1,200 mg of calcium.

Selenium: Selenium is a mineral that is so effective against cancers that even those already diagnosed can improve their outcome by adding it to their diet. Selenium is found naturally in tuna and many nuts. Shoot for a daily dose of 200 mcg.

Fiber: A high fiber diet may protect you from colon cancer and reduce your risk of breast cancer. Get fiber naturally in grains, fruits, bulky vegetables, cereals or add fiber supplements to your diet. Beyond cancer prevention, fiber is just plain good for your general health.

Vitamin C: Vitamin C helps keep your immune system healthy and a healthy immune system can fight of diseases including cancer. Try to get your vitamin C in the foods you eat, citrus fruits, peppers, berries, dark green leafy vegetables or use supplements to get 500-1,000 mg per day.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E also boosts your immune system but is a little more difficult to add to your diet with food. Foods high in vitamin E include most nuts, wheat germ, oysters and olive oil. If you use a supplement don’t over do it, stay at 400mg a day. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and will build up in your system if you take too much. This is not dangerous, but may cause some people headaches.

Beta Carotene: Beta Carotene is another immune system booster. Try to get your intake to 30 mg a day, through diet. Foods rich in beta carotene include orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, Brussels sprouts and broccoli.
