Richard Gere was born on August 31, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the second child of five children. He has one older sister, two younger sisters and one younger brother. Young Gere went to college on a sports scholarship at the University of Massachusetts where he studied drama and philosophy. After two years Gere left the University and went into acting on stage in theatre. He worked one year with the Young Vic Company appearing in Shakespearean plays.

In 1975, he made his debut off-Broadway in the play "Killer’s Head." He then transitioned into film with his first role being in the movie "Report to the Commissioner." The movie that launched his career was "American Gigolo." Although he gives outstanding performances in all of his films his most publicized movies were "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Pretty Woman" which co-starred Julia Roberts. He seems to have worked with Julia Roberts more than any other actress because of the onscreen chemistry they have. Actors and actresses that have worked with Gere will tell you he is a people person – he is genuinely interested in you as a human being.

Because of a homosexual role he played in a Broadway play, this started rumors that Gere was gay when in fact he’s not.

Richard Gere has made over thirty movies and appeared in three television shows with the first appearance being on "Kojack" in 1973.

Richard Gere appeals to women of all ages and he knows it. He has captured their hearts with his charm and good looks.

On December 12, 1991, Richard Gere married Cynthia Crawford. They were divorced only four years later. She wanted to have children but Richard didn’t. She also didn’t share his views on Buddhism. After the split up with his wife, Richard Gere started dating actress Carey Lowell. Gere changed his mind about wanting children and he and Cary Lowell had a son who was born on February 6, 2000. They named him Homer James Jigme Gere and this bundle of love is daddy’s real joy in life.

Gere is a devout Buddhist and together with composer Philip Glass, Richard Gere founded the Tibet House, which is a non-profit organization in Greenwich Village. The Tibet House is dedicated to the preservation of Tibetan culture.

Gere also advocates for ecological and political causes that he strongly believes in.
