Nick Nolte Biography
Nick Nolte has come a long way in his life. He has turned his life around to a healthier way of living.
Nick Nolte was born on February 8, 1941 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was raised in both Iowa and Nebraska and showed very little interest in the theatre or movies when he was a young boy. He enjoyed playing football and this took care of the aggression he felt inside. He attended five colleges to play football but flunked out because he wasn’t interested in keeping his grades up. He also didn’t know how to read until he was an adult. At twenty-one years of age, Nick Nolte was arrested for selling fake draft cards. His five-year sentence was suspended.
It wasn’t until after he saw a production of Arthur Miller’s "Death of a Salesman" in 1962, that Nolte realized what his true calling in life was. The process of acting seemed to mirror his soul searching at the time and eased his discomfort with his environment, which he thought of as violent, aggressive, hostile and highly competitive. Until he was his thirties he spent his career acting in theatre and in small television roles.
In 1966, Nolte married actress Sheila Page, but their relationship ended in divorce in 1971. This was the first of a long string of failed relationships.
In 1975, Nolte’s acting career took off when he was cast as Tom Jordache in the television mini-series "Rich Man, Poor Man."
In 1996, Nick Nolte started making films that revealed the depth and range of his talent. This was because he stopped drinking alcohol with the help of A.A. Now that he was sober and in charge of his life, Nolte was able to redirect his acting career. He chose roles that were challenging in high-quality low-budget films. He has acted in over forty movies.
Because of his history of heavy drinking and cigarette smoking, Nick knows that he has lost a valuable part of his health. In order to regain it back, he is living on organic food, injections and vitamin and mineral supplements that are being given to him by a doctor. His regime is designed just for him and it costs thousands of dollars a month for him to do this. To date, he has the reflexes of a forty-five year old and has increased some brain function that he had lost. While Mr. Nolte has given up alcohol, he still struggles with completely giving up cigarette smoking. There are days when he only has one or two cigarettes instead of chain smoking three packs a day.
Nolte resides in Malibu, California with actress Vicki Lewis.
