Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. Young Ford grew up in the neighborhoods of Park Ridge and Morton Grove, both suburbs in Illinois. After high school, Ford went to Ripon College in Wisconsin where he majored in Philosophy. Since school was not his forte, he flunked out of college, but not before he discovered that he liked drama from the classes he had taken.
The summer following his last year in college, Ford went to Williams Bay, Wisconsin and worked in the summer stock theatre. When summer was over, Ford headed to Hollywood, California with his wife, Mary Marquardt, whom he had met in college.
While acting in Laguna Beach, a talent scout from Columbia Pictures spotted the young actor. Ford signed a contract with Columbia. After eighteen months, Ford’s contract was cancelled after only acting in small bit parts. Universal signed him up immediately where he again worked in small acting roles. Since money was not rolling in, Ford went to work as a carpenter.
In 1972, he auditioned for the movie "American Graffiti" where he worked with Richard Dreyfus and Ron Howard. The movie came out the following year and Ford was an instant success. It was also his first work with George Lucas, who kept Mr. Ford in mind for his "Star Wars" movies. With four years in between roles, Ford went back to work as a carpenter.
In 1977, Ford got the role as Han Solo in "Star Wars." From here, his movie career took off, with Ford making the other two Star Wars movies and "Apocalypse Now."
In 1978, Ford and his college sweetheart Mary Marquardt divorced. Over the years, Mary and Ford had two sons together.
In 1981, Ford teamed up with George Lucas again along with Steven Spielberg in the Indiana Jones movie series, which made Ford an even bigger star. It is rumored that another Indiana Jones movie is in the works and slated for release in the year 2004, when Harrison Ford will be sixty-two years old.
In 1983, Ford married screenwriter Melissa Mathison.
Ford has become a big box office draw and a much sought after actor. Ford resides with his family in their homes – one in Manhattan and a ranch in Wyoming. He enjoys flying (he owns six planes, a helicopter and a jet) and motorcycle riding in his spare time between films.
