Betty Joan Perske was born September 16, 1924 in New York, New York. Her mother raised her alone as her parents were divorced when she was five years old. She had originally wanted to be a dancer but changed her mind when she became interested in acting.

She took acting lessons at age fifteen and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Before landing an acting job, Miss Bacall worked a variety of odd jobs, which included being a theater usher and selling guides in front of Sardi’s restaurant. At age eighteen, the editor of "Harper’s Bazaar" magazine noticed Miss Bacall, and she was featured on the cover three consecutive months.

A model was born until 1943 when the wife of film director Howard Hawks spotted her on the cover of "Harper’s Bazaar". Miss Bacall got her first break in movies at age twenty when she played with Humphrey Bogart in the movie "To Have or Have Not." Lauren Bacall started a whole new look in Hollywood – tall, lean, and sophisticated with a sultry husky voice.

In 1945 Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were wed and they became the top couple in Hollywood on and off the movie screen. Unfortunately, their marriage ended in 1957 when Mr. Bogart died at their home in California. Miss Bacall returned to New York and did marry again to actor Jason Robards, Jr. in 1961 and they were divorced in 1973.

Miss Bacall has never stopped working, whether it is on stage, film, or television and has fought for better acting parts for women and has published her own book. She is known for being elegant, glamorous, having a head for talent, and for possessing great courage and intelligence. This woman is indeed in a class of her own.
